Irritating or Poking Wire
To relieve the pain temporarily, follow these steps:
- Dry the tooth in the area that bothers you with a paper towel.
- Pinch off some orthodontic wax and roll it into a ball.
- Place the wax over the wire or part of the appliance that is making you uncomfortable.
- If your wax is not sticking, you may have excess saliva on your teeth. You may need to use a Q-tip or napkin to dry off your teeth and then try placing the wax again.
New Spaces between Your Teeth
- This is completely normal and a sign that your teeth are straightening out!
- This usually happens when you first begin treatment or after a new wire change.
- We will close the gap at the appropriate time during your treatment as you progress through treatment.
Teeth Feeling Loose or Sore Teeth
- It is normal for teeth undergoing movement to feel sore or loose.
- Once the tooth movements are completed the tooth will feel normal again.
- If you are concerned about a tooth, let us know and we will examine it during your next scheduled adjustment.
A Spacer (also known Separator) Comes Out
- Usually, separators need to be in between the teeth for 1-2 weeks prior to placement of a band or appliance.
- If a spacer has come out, please contact our office.
- We’ll let you know if you need to come in to have a new separator placed.
A Bracket Loosens from a Tooth
- If your bracket has come loose, please call or text our office to inform us.
- We will let you know if you can wait until your scheduled appointment, or if you should come in sooner to have the bracket repaired.
- Broken braces or appliances may slow your treatment time.
- Patients with braces should avoid certain foods. Please refer to our list of foods to avoid.
You Lost Your Rubber Bands or Forgot How to Wear Them
- If you’ve lost your rubber bands, please contact our office for a replacement.
- If you don't remember how to put your rubber bands on, contact our office, or ask us to show you at your next adjustment.
- Please remember, in order to achieve the best results, you must wear your rubber bands as instructed!
You Experience a Mouth Injury
- If your tooth is in pain, it is most likely a dental emergency and you should contact your dentist immediately.
- If you can not get in touch with your family dentist, or are unsure what to do in your situation, please give us a call.
